James Bond is to the popular imagination what Batman is to comic books. These beloved characters have been around since the 1930s and they have become a part of our cultural landscape. In this article, I will be telling you about how James Bond’s legacy has spawned a range of products that have transcended their cultural origins and been involved in popular culture outside their original industry sphere. For example, I’ll talk about how James Bond inspired cars from Aston Martin and BMW, as well as London-based Virgin Atlantic Airways which also offered an airline named the 007 British Airways Limited Partnership before it was bought by BA in 2014. In this article, I will also be talking about how James Bond has been featured in video games from Wii Sports Resort to the PlayStation 3’s Infamous, which was based on a comic book. This is a rather humble list of all the James Bond-inspired products that have been around for over fifty years. Some of the aforementioned products have even been licensed by Sony and used in promotional materials for their Playstation consoles. In 1997, Aston Martin produced a limited edition Sports Car to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of James Bond’s film debut in Dr. No.: a 2+2 V8 Vanquish which was designed by Pininfarina and built in Italy by Maserati. The car was finished in dark grey with a blue stripe on the side, while the interior was customised with grey leather upholstery and blue carpet. Only two of these models were ever produced, and while Aston Martin has not revealed who bought them, one of them sold for £1 million at Bonhams. On the other hand, BMW created a concept car for Pierce Brosnan’s final appearance as James Bond in 2002 titled The BMW Z3 Coupé which cost £125 million to produce over three years. It was featured in Tomorrow Never Dies or GoldenEye as Bond’s supercar. The three-wheeled one-seater called the SSC (Sportscars by Cizeta) was built to reclaim the C2 classification which was outlawed after it was used for homologation purposes in FIA GT racing. The machine was produced by Cizeta and had a 3.0 litre V8 engine that pumped out 320 bhp which could go from 0 to 100 kph in just 3.4 seconds. On the other hand, the Lotus Esprit S4 GT “Speedster” made its first appearance in "License to Kill". It is based on James Bond’s Lotus Esprit Turbo Esprit with some modifications. The BMW Z8 was a concept car based on the 535i with certain changes. The production version of the Z8 made its first appearance in "The World is Not Enough". This Aston Martin DB5-themed model was built by Aston Martin and featured a V12 engine that had been tuned to produce 466 horsepower that could go from 0 to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds. The Lotus Esprit S3/S3 Turbo was the most popular car in Bond’s arsenal throughout his career, and its shape is very similar to Bond’s most famous car, the Lotus Esprit S1/S2.
